Country Spotlight: Canada

Consisting of ten different provinces and three territories, Canada is located in North America and is home to over 35 million people. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, Canada also has an extremely high education rate when compared with other countries in similar size.In this month’s spotlight, we take a closer look at some of Canada’s famous inhabitants and exports:

Inventors

Cluny MacPhearson


Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1879, Cluny MacPhearson was the man behind the gas mask.  Serving during the First World War, MacPhearson worked hard to research into the methods of creating and using protection against the poisonous gases used in the war, and in 1915, he invented the MacPhearson respirator.  MacPhearson was later awarded many awards and accolades for his contribution to medical science.

James Gosling, Ph.D

Born near Calgary in Canada, James Gosling entered the world on the 19th May 1955 and became famous many years later due to being an amazing software developer, with many people knowing the name as he was the father of the Java programming language.

Sir Stanford Flemming


A well-known Canadian inventor and engineer, Sir Stanford Flemming was the man behind Canada’s first postage stamp – as well as the first postage stamp, Sir Flemming was also engineered much of the Intercolonial Railway as well as the Canadian Pacific Railway.

CAE Inc.


Formally known as Canadian Aviation Electronics, CAE Inc. is a well-known Canadian manufacturer of modelling, simulation and training technology. The company was born in 1947 and has now spread its training and manufacturing operations to over 20 countries around the world.

Harbour Publishing

Founded by Howard and Mary White in 1974 and based on the small, harbour in Sunshine Coast called Pender Harbour, the publishers mainly focus on books about the wildlife and environment and to date, Harbour Publishing has published over 600 titles.

Famous for…


Totem Poles Totem poles have been dated back to the very first Northwest Coast Native tribes who made these colourful poles as part of West Coast art from the 1800’s onwards.

Basketball


The sport is very popular in Canada, and it was in fact born there too. Invented in 1891 by Canadian Dr. James Naismith, the game is now huge and followed worldwide.
